well that title explains itself. The exercise we did today in class with making a new game based off of chess made me think about what makes games games. Personal for me what makes a game is to be given a challenge or goal and a set of rules in which to complete the task. Its up to you the player to take the rules and bend them in a way to complete you goal. This is kinda an abstract explanation so let me try to explain a bit. Take chess for instance, the goal is to corner the king in order to win. I’ve been playing chess since I was a child and when I was younger and played everyday I was a formidable opponent for people much old then me. When my parents had parties they used to have me come out with my chess bored and beat the pants off their guest whom were usually in their 30′s and 40′s, so lets just say they didn’t like being beaten by an 8 year old. Well back to the topic on hand, after playing chess for a while I develop a strategy to target my opponents more powerful pieces. Although the goal of chess is to check mate the king there is no rule saying that you can’t target other pieces. Once your opponent is deprived of his more powerful pieces it is only a matter of time till you claim victory. So it short, a game is a goal and a set of rules, its up to the player to find a way to manipulate the rules in their advantage . well Heroes is on in a few minutes so this is it for now.

Well I made a weblog like the professors showed us in class. I’m still trying to figure out how this works so I’m going to spend some time playing with it over the next few days, so don’t be surprised if it changes from day to day. Weblogging seems pretty neat but I tend to be a bit anti-conformist and don’t like to follow the trends on the web or in real-life. The only reason I even have a Facebook is because a few friends of mine that I met playing World of Warcraft demanded to keep in touch with me when I told them I was quiting and I won’t even try to make a Myspace. Also I’m going to be goofy around with Twittering like the Professors were doing today. It seemed kinda neat but looked to me like some sort of new tool that stalkers are going to use, why the hell would you want some of the weirdos on the interweb know where you live? Besides that, twittering and weblogging seem neat and Iplan on using them in the future, even after I’m finished with the New Media course.
